At Canyon Vista Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program, we are committed to the well-being of our patients and the superior training of young physicians. Our program provides flexible and personalized training that many young physicians crave. Our Resident Clinic offers a range of family health care that is friendly, timely, and cost-effective while maintaining an educational and fun environment.
The program has an Osteopathic Recognition status of Continued Recognition.
Program Highlights
Our Family Medicine program is a fantastic training program for doctors who want to learn about care in critical need areas and continue developing their Osteopathic skillset. During the program, the residents receive comprehensive training in various medical specialties while learning to manage multiple health conditions, develop strong communication skills, and gain experience caring for the whole family unit.
Program Director
Marc Kaplan, D.O., is an icon in Sierra Vista. He has served the city and surrounding areas for more than 30 years. He ensures that future primary care physician residents obtain a quality education.

Mission
Our mission is to educate inexperienced physicians in the art of Family Medicine. This program will teach each trainee the necessary competencies to become a fully actuated Family Physician who, upon graduation, may become a respected member of the local community and improve the medical care in the communities served.
Aims
- Train future physicians that will serve Cochise County, the State of Arizona, and the United States as a whole.
- Provide a didactic and clinical environment supporting diverse trainees' educational and wellness needs, helping them attain competencies to allow them to serve their communities as physicians and good citizens.
- Provide the resources needed for the career development of our trainees.
- Foster a culture of quality, continuous improvement, and safety.
- Teach patient-centered communication through shared decision-making and effective interactions with patients, families, caregivers, and professionals.
- Advocate for the individual patient, for patient populations, and the health improvement of our communities.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity, equity, and inclusion for the Canyon Vista Medical Center, Family Medicine Residency Program.
Our resident selection committee is sensitive to cultural differences and is guided by this awareness when outlining the essential and unique qualifications desired for incoming residents. We aim to maintain a diverse group that will ensure mutual educational enhancement. We seek to keep a group of visible minorities of women and groups underrepresented in residencies. When reviewing the ERAS application, any identifying markers are purposely not reviewed. Our applicant interview process is structured to ensure that applicant questions are focused on characteristics that highlight applicants’ qualities and the likelihood of succeeding in our training program. One of the program goals is the retention of graduated residents. Our most recent graduates have chosen to remain in the community. We are currently negotiating to add these individuals as teaching faculty. In past years, several graduated residents have remained in the community and surrounding areas and have been a part of our teaching faculty.
Our Sponsoring Institution provides access to online and live webinars on diversity and inclusion, specifically in education and recruitment, selection, and retention of residents and faculty. This is an ongoing discussion with our residents and faculty, and part of this process is providing a safe space to have these discussions, listening, and paying attention to all residents and faculty, specifically underrepresented individuals. Our Medical School, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, has developed a grant program for underrepresented individuals seeking admission to medical school. Since the medical school also serves as a pipeline for recruitment and 3rd and 4th-year students’ complete rotations at our site, this provides an opportunity for a more focused review on recruiting underrepresented and diverse individuals.
