The Costin Institute is an academic program for medical personnel that offers training in critical areas such as leadership, teaching and learning styles and emotional intelligence.

About the Costin Institute

The Costin Institute for Medical Educators is an academic program specifically designed for medical personnel currently involved in teaching, academic management as well as those aspiring to a career in medical academe. The program is a year-long educational experience which offers training in critical areas such as leadership, teaching and learning styles and emotional intelligence. It consists of four weekend sessions (Thursday through Saturday) with 18 contact hours per session with pre- and post-session assignments. The goal is to train physicians to become more effective teachers and administrators.

The Costin Institute was established at Midwestern University in 2003 through endowed contribution from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation and named in honor of J. Richard Costin, D.O., one of the osteopathic profession's leading surgeons and teachers of general surgery. Dr. Costin was a 1949 graduate of Midwestern University's Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) and served as chairman of the board of CCOM. He participated in the transition of a single college into a full university with five colleges. Dr. Costin passed away on August 9, 2014.

Program Description

The Costin Institute is a yearlong program directed at helping physician-educators and medical educators become more effective teachers and/or administrators and most importantly, leaders. The topics covered during the Costin program include teaching/learning styles, multiple self -awareness tools such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Emotional Intelligence, leadership, budget and finance, professional commitment, communication skills, technology that supports teaching, evidence based medicine, and research and scholarly pursuits.

Cohort 20

Applications are being accepted for Cohort 20. Details regarding schedule, etc. are being finalized and will be announced soon.

Carrie Baker-Royer, D.O., (Cohort 16), Associate Dean for Medical Education at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Louisiana Campus, was honored by the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce as part of its Top 20 Under 40 awards. "I take great honor in having the opportunity to teach future doctors," Dr. Baker-Royer said. Learn more about Dr. Baker-Royer's Top 20 Under 40 Award.

Darren Beck, Ph.D. (Cohort 18) was recently named the Associate Dean for Biomedical Affairs and Research at the VCOM Auburn campus. Dr. Beck stated in his message “It was competitive job search that included both external and internal applicants and not a simple promotion. My leadership training with the Costin Institute was discussed and I’m sure considered.”

The Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University hosted a patient panel on amyloidosis, a rare disease characterized by abnormal protein buildup, to enhance medical students' understanding through firsthand patient experiences. Clinical Integration Chair George Borrelli, D.O., (Cohort 17) emphasized the importance of early diagnosis for better outcomes, while Ozzie Giglio shared his journey from diagnosis to participating in a clinical trial.

  • Robert A. Cain, D.O., AACOM president and CEO (Cohort 5) announced AACOM’s inaugural Graduate Medical Education Development Fellows.   • The American College of Osteopathic Internists has inducted AACOM President and CEO Robert A. Cain, D.O., (Cohort 5) as a member of its 2024 class of the Gillum Society of Master Fellows.

OU-HCOM Plans $66.9M Translational Research Center

The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) has received an $8 million grant from the NIH Office of Research Infrastructure to help build the $66.9 million Heritage Translational Research Center. "If you bring people together and collaborate, there's greater opportunity, impact and possibilities relative to translation research into findings that impact the community, which is important to the foundation," said Terri Donlin Huesman, President and CEO of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation.

Robin Dyer, D.O., (Cohort 13) retired at the end of August after 30 years of teaching at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and practicing at OSU Medicine. Both Dennis Blankenship, D.O., Dean of OSU-COM, and Natasha Bray, D.O., Dean of OSU-COM at Cherokee Nation, studied under Dr. Dyer and consider her a mentor. Kelli Glaser, D.O., (Cohort 7), Professor of Family Medicine for Rocky Vista University, launched a training program for university employees to learn more about osteopathic medicine. The training program was made publicly available for free to the osteopathic profession in April 2024 and Dr. Glaser had a paper accepted for publication about this training program in the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine. CHSU Accreditation Celebration Commemorates All Programs Being Accredited

The California Health Sciences University (CHSU) held a celebration to commemorate achieving full accreditation for all its programs in September. The Accreditation Celebration brought together more than 300 people on the medical school campus in Clovis, including CHSU medical and pre-medical students, alumni, administration, faculty, staff, trustees, founders, elected officials and community partners. Representatives from the offices of Reps. Vince Fong (R-CA), Jim Costa (D-CA) and California State Senator Shannon Grove also attended the event and presented CHSU with certificates of special recognition for achieving full accreditation for all its programs. Dr. John Graneto, (Cohort 5) is the founding Dean of CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine (MSOM) in Hagerstown, Md., will accept its first class for enrollment in fall 2025. "Our MSOM mission is to train socially responsible, professionally accomplished and community-oriented physicians," said Paula Gregory, D.O., M.B.A., (Cohort 13) founding Dean of MSOM.   • The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation announced the launch of a $400,000 scholarship fund for Vallejo, Calif., students pursuing higher education at Touro University California and other schools. "The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation’s dedication to our community is exemplary, and it is with great pride that we recognize their generous contributions and efforts to foster inclusivity and unity," said Tami Hendriksz, D.O., (Cohort 8) interim chief academic officer and dean of the Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine--California. COMP-Northwest Associate Dean Stephanie White, D.O., (Costin West Coast Cohort) offered a glimpse into her life as mom, wife, doctor and teacher.     • Josh Cox, D.O., Executive Dean of KCU College of Osteopathic Medicine and Vice Provost for Medical Affairs (Costin Cohort 12) was quoted in the recent article, KCU-COM, HCA partnership advances physician education: A six-year partnership between the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine and HCA Midwest Health expands the number of clerkships for third and fourth-year medical students and gives HCA access to academic research and classroom resources. "For our medical students to train alongside HCA Midwest Health’s highly-skilled physicians is invaluable to their growth and development as future physicians,” Dr. Cox said.

    • The Liberty Journal reported: Medical students at the Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine presented research at meetings of the American Heart Association and the American Society of Nephrology, among other national conferences, this year. "When it comes to getting residency spots, their eventual practices, and other steps in their medical careers, research plays a pivotal role," said Joseph Gigliotti, Ph.D., Director of Research and Special Projects (Costin Cohort 16).

    • Congratulations are in order for John Graneto, D.O. (Costin Cohort 5): California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine received accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. "We are extremely proud to have our medical school receive a seven-year accreditation from the COCA, which is the maximum amount for a new school," said John Graneto, D.O., Dean of CHSU-COM said in a recent article.

    • CCOM's Teresa Hubka, D.O., (Costin Cohort 4) begins tenure as president of the American Osteopathic Association: Teresa Hubka, D.O., Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University, has begun her term as president of the American Osteopathic Association.
