Midwestern University Honors Service, Raises Scholarship Funds at Annual Gala
Academic, healthcare, business, and community leaders from around the Valley of the Sun joined together at Midwestern University on Saturday, October 14 at the annual Bright Lights, Shining Stars gala, which recognizes and honors community service and leadership. The event was held at the University’s Glendale Campus at 19555 North 59th Avenue.

Students Get Peek at Optometry Program at CCO
Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Optometry (CCO) held its 3rd Annual Summer Eye Experience (SEE) program on the Downers Grove Campus for 30 college students and recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in optometry. Students representing 14 different states attended the three-day program that took place in June.

Christine Schumacher, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCACP
Dr. Schumacher is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Director of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy, Downers Grove Campus and a Clinical Pharmacist at Advocate Medical Group Southeast Center in Chicago, Illinois. She currently works in a primary care clinic to provide comprehensive medication management for a variety of internal medicine disease states, including but not limited to, heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and asthma. Renier Velez-Cruz, Ph.D.
Dr. Velez-Cruz obtained his bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez Campus, where he developed an interest in chemotherapeutic drugs that damage DNA. After completing his degree, Dr. Velez-Cruz moved to Nashville, TN to begin his graduate work at Vanderbilt University. During his graduate work Dr. Velez-Cruz worked in type II DNA topoisomerases and their interaction with endogenous DNA lesions. After completing his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Dr. Velez-Cruz moved to Strasbourg, France for a post-doctoral fellowship at the Institut de Génétique et Biologie

Being a student at Midwestern University was definitely hard work and fast-paced, but it was not competitive here. Everyone just wanted to help each other and in that aspect it was just really welcoming. People studied together and shared ideas.
