What inspired you to pursue a healthcare career?

Growing up, I always had an interest in science courses, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with that. My optometrist suggested that I consider optometry as a career. I did some research and took a biopsychology course, where I learned more about the visual system.  It was fascinating! After that course, I decided to pursue an optometry degree. I have also always loved helping others, and it gives me a great sense of gratification. Pursuing healthcare will allow me to help others for the rest of my career.

How did your background and history factor into your career choice?

My parents always supported me and never pressured me into any specific career. Originally, I thought I wanted to become a pastry chef, but I switched majors when I realized that it wasn’t a career that I would want to have long term. Knowing that I had the constant support of my family allowed me to select a path that I was certain I wanted to take. Working as an optometric technician also solidified my desire of becoming an optometrist. Seeing the trusting relationships that the doctors built with their patients is something that I found inspiring, and I would like to build those relationships with my patients in the future.

Why did you decide to attend Midwestern University?

When I first stepped foot onto the Glendale Campus, I thought it was beautiful. I had a wonderful time at my interview. The atmosphere was relaxing, and I felt that the faculty truly wanted to get to know us, and they wanted to make it memorable – and they did! By the end of my interview day, I could picture myself as a student here at Midwestern.

What about a Midwestern University education do you want to carry forward in your career?

Midwestern has an interprofessional approach to healthcare, integrating the different programs and emphasizing the need to work together to treat a patient. I want to be able to provide this experience to my patients, ensuring they are taking care of all aspects of their health. I also carry with me the knowledge that learning never stops – it is continuous throughout life and will make all of us better healthcare providers.
