What is your branch and rank?
I am a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force
How did your background and history factor into your career choice?
I grew up in a military family with both my parents serving in the United States Air Force. My parents are first-generation Mexican Americans who did not come from much and joined the military as a way to have a better life. My parents always encouraged me to follow my dreams and become the first person in my family to pursue a career in healthcare. My sister’s journey with OCD is what initially inspired me to become a healthcare provider. I saw how empowered they made her feel and I want to do the same for my future patients.
Why did you choose to serve in the Air Force?
Through my parents’ service, I saw the sense of camaraderie among their squadrons and the importance of giving every task 110%. The military provided support throughout my sister’s medical journey and a family during my parents’ many deployments. I joined because I want to be a part of something bigger than myself. I want to support and improve the lives of Airmen, their families, and people around the world.
Why did you choose Midwestern?
I was first interested in Midwestern due to ultrasound being heavily incorporated into the curriculum and the numerous leadership opportunities on campus. However, I think my favorite part about Midwestern is the amazing faculty. The faculty are passionate about teaching and they really care about their students.
