About Midwestern

Can you tell me a little about Midwestern University?

Midwestern University offers 20+ health care programs across two campus locations in Downers Grove, IL and Glendale, AZ. At Midwestern, you can expect a high quality and exceptional education. In addition to the hands-on experience you'll receive through clinical rotations and state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, our faculty and staff will make you feel comfortable, at ease and at home. 

Can you tell me a little about Midwestern University's history?

Midwestern University was founded in 1900 by Dr. J. Martin Littlejohn. Originally called the American College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, MWU only had an osteopathic medicine program, located in Chicago, IL.

MWU moved to its Downers Grove, IL Campus in 1986. At this time, the university expanded to include new health sciences programs. MWU expanded again in 1995, with a campus in Glendale, AZ.

What is MWU's One Health Initiative?

Can I talk to an admissions advisor?

If you're an applicant or future student, you can make time to speak to an advisor by signing up for a Virtual Info Session in Arizona, a Virtual Info Session in Illinois, a Campus Tour in Arizona, or a Campus Tour in Illinois. If there is no time available, reach out to us.

Calendar/Schedule

What is MWU's Academic Calendar like?

Midwestern University classes take place in four quarters (or terms): summer, fall, winter, and spring. Most quarters are 10 weeks in length plus one week of final exams.

When do MWU terms begin/end?

The MWU summer term begins in May/June. The MWU fall term begins in August. The MWU winter term begins in November. The MWU spring term begins in February.

When does orientation/MWU classes start?

Each program has its own orientation date & class start date. Some programs start in the Summer term, including PA, PT, Pharmacy and more. Others start in the Fall term, including Optometry, Dental, DO, Vet Med and more.

Please make sure to choose the correct Academic Calendar. They are organized by campus and academic year.

Can I start at MWU anytime during the year?

Unfortunately not. Our programs consist of cohorts, so there are specific start times for each program. Check out our Academic Calendar to learn more. If you have questions, you can contact our Admissions Office.

 

Classes/Catalog

Can I see the course catalog?

Does MWU offer Continuing Education courses? 

Midwestern University does not offer Continuing Education classes for the general public. 

Continuing education opportunities may be offered for medical professionals. Please contact your specialty's department at MWU for more information.

What are MWU classes like?

Instead of by semester, Midwestern University splits its courses up into four quarters: summer, fall, winter, and spring. Most quarters are 10 weeks in length plus one week of final exams. 

Midwestern University offers classes in 20+ health care programs. Check out our Downers Grove, IL Curriculum page or our Glendale, AZ Curriculum page for example class schedules.

Are lectures recorded?

All of Midwestern’s lecture halls are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and the ability to record lectures. Whether or not a lecture is available via canvas is up to the discretion of the faculty member teaching that course. 

Are lectures mandatory?

It depends. Whether or not a lecture is mandatory is up to the discretion of the individual faculty member teaching that course. 

Is attendance mandatory?

Each program's attendance policy is different. Please contact your program or the individual department for more information.

Do you offer online or night classes? 

Most classes are offered Monday through Friday in-person and on campus during typical business hours.

Online classes are usually not available. However, some programs (such as Precision Medicine or select Nursing programs) offer online courses.

We also offer a hybrid Physical Therapy program on our Glendale campus.

Can you tell me a little bit more about the Body Donation Program?

MWU is grateful for the donors of our Body Donation Program. Our donors help our university in one of two ways:

  • Students get to experience a detailed study of anatomy, which will in turn help them treat thousands of others in their future careers
  • Bodies are used for research to advance medical and surgical techniques/procedures

Graduation/Commencement

Can you tell me a little about graduation/commencement?

We are so proud of our MWU grads and can't wait to see them walk across the stage on their big day! We are also pleased to share that all guests can attend our commencement ceremonies. No tickets are required. 

What do I need to know about obtaining my cap/gown/hood?

MWU's graduation regalia vendor is Herff Jones. MWU will purchase your regalia, however, you must place your individual order. 

Important: Herff Jones will ship your regalia to the address you provide. These items will be yours to keep. If not ordered by the deadline, you will not be allowed to walk with your class.

What is the schedule for Graduation/Commencement?

To find out when your commencement ceremony will take place, see our upcoming commencement ceremony schedule.

Information for All Guests: Doors to the auditorium will open exactly one hour before the scheduled time of the ceremony. Guests will not be given access to the auditorium earlier. All guests are welcome to attend. No ticket required.

What should family/friends know about attending the ceremony?

Thank you for supporting our MWU grads!

Here's what to know about the ceremony:

  • Arrive 30min early.
  • Tickets not required.
  • Professional photos will be taken of each graduate.
  • Remain in your seats during the ceremony.
  • Guests with disabilities must bring their own equipment (wheelchair, walker, etc.). Register for seating accommodations.

How can students register for graduation?

Students must register for graduation. This will ensure that your name is correct on your diploma and that your name and hometown are listed correctly on the commencement program.

Yes. Midwestern University livestreams its Commencement Ceremonies.

At Midwestern University, tuition/cost of attendance rates may vary depending on what program and/or what campus you choose.

Does tuition change for in-state/out-of-state?

Midwestern University charges the same tuition for everyone; there is no difference for in-state/out-of-state.

What housing options are available?

Arizona offers the following on-campus housing option:

  • Student Apartment Complex: Consists of studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments. Also includes a pool, volleyball court, sand play area for children, picnic and barbecue areas.

Students can also choose to live off-campus.

What housing options are available?

Illinois offers the following on-campus housing options:

  • Redwood Hall: This popular option offers single-occupancy rooms, air conditioning, a built-in closet and more. Most rooms include a private bathroom.
  • Pines Apartments: This apartment complex offers one-bedroom apartments with 500 square feet of living space, a kitchenette, central air conditioning and more.

Students can also choose to live off-campus.

MWUNet, iCampus/Canvas & Student Email

What is MWUNet?

MWUNet is Midwestern University's student/faculty/staff portal. Students should have a MWUNet account once they apply. This is where students will receive updates on their application/application materials, financial aid, billing statements & more.

Students, Faculty & Staff: To log in, visit online.midwestern.edu.

Parents/family members are allowed partial access to MWUNet if they want to help their students pay their bill.

How do I create an MWUNet account?

Important: To create an MWU account, you will need your CAS ID. You should have a CAS ID if you have applied to a program.

Once you have your CAS ID, set up your account here. Please select "Applicant Account."

I'm having technical issues and/or having trouble logging in. What do I do?

If you are having trouble logging in, accessing your MWUNet account or email, iCampus/Canvas issues, or something similar, the best way to get help is to contact the Midwestern Support team. Please contact us directly for help.

How do I get access to my MWU email?

Student email accounts are created 24hrs AFTER making your first payment.

To log in to your email, check out this document or follow these steps:

1. Visit portal.office.com.

2. Enter your email address. The first part of your email is the same as your MWUNet portal name. (mwuportalname@midwestern.edu)

3. Enter your password. It should be the same password you use for MWUNet.

4. Click Sign In.

5. Navigate to Outlook on the left.

What is iCampus/Canvas? How do I access iCampus/Canvas?

MWU students can access their courses digitally through the platform, iCampus, powered by Canvas. They can submit assignments, participate in discussions, take quizzes, view their grades and more.

When logging in to iCampus/Canvas, I'm receiving an error message. What do I do? 

If you are receiving an error message when trying to log in, such as "This site can't be reached," try clearing your browsing data and/or your cache. Then, log in again. You should be able to access your course.

MWU Transcripts

How do I obtain a copy of my MWU transcripts?

MWU transcripts can be obtained from the third party company, Parchment. Request your official transcript from Parchment.
Official transcripts are free for currently enrolled students. 

Alumni are charged $10 per mailed transcript or for orders placed using Secure Electronic Delivery. 

 

Parking at MWU

What is parking like at MWU?

When entering campus, you will first drive through our Welcome Center, where security officers are stationed. They may help answer any questions about parking. Officers are also on patrol throughout campus.

Quick Info About Parking/Driving on Campus:

  • Speed Limit on Campus Roads: 15 mph
  • Speed Limit in Parking Garage(s): 5 mph 
  • You must stop at stop signs and pedestrian crossings when pedestrians are present

Where can I park?

Designated parking areas are established on campus for use by students, employees & visitors. Handicap parking is also available.

Parking on roadways, sidewalks or in parking lot traffic lanes is not permitted.

Overnight parking is permitted but first notify MWU. Call 630-971-6081 (IL) or 623-572-3201 (AZ).

Do I need a parking permit?

Parking permits (displayed in the lower left of your windshield) are required for students & employees. Permits are needed for all vehicles, including motorcycles.

Students/employees should receive info about parking permits as part of the onboarding process.

What about the Craft Room and the Music Room?

The Wellness & Recreation Center offers the opportunity to be creative.

Illinois:
Our craft room includes tables, chairs, a sink, sewing machines, board games and puzzles. There are also programs offered on topics like sewing, cake decorating, knitting, stained glass, and jewelry making. In addition, we have a piano drum set, and a sound-proof practice room (first come first serve).

Arizona:
We have two pianos (first come first serve). We also offer crafts.

 

Tutoring

Can you tell me about MWU Tutoring Services?

Tutoring is available to all MWU students at all stages in their academic journey. Note: Students who request tutoring must regularly attend classes.

We offer:

What is Small Group and Open Group Tutoring?

Small Group/Assigned Tutoring is usually one-on-one. Students who are in academic jeopardy are given priority.

Open Group Tutoring is for all students and includes an approved tutor. Each group focuses on one course (courses with the greatest need are represented).

What are the hours for the Counseling Services?

The Arizona Counseling Services Office at MWU is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Illinois Counseling Services Office at MWU is open Mondays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Walk-in appointments may be available, though it is recommended to schedule an appointment.

Are there meal plans? How do I get started?

At Midwestern University, our meal plans consist of loading your student ID card with "Munch Money."

To load "Munch Money" on your card, log on to MWUNet. On the homepage, find "ID Card Balance" and click on it (Next to the Cafeteria Menu).

By loading your card with "Munch Money," you will receive an extra 15% bonus of "Munch Money" added to your card.

Can I order food online? How do I do that?

To order a meal in advance for pick up or delivery, first visit MWUNet to log in. 

If you haven't already, make sure you have loaded your ID card with "Munch Money."

On the MWUNet homepage, you'll find the Cafeteria Menu. Click on the menu.

You will receive a prompt to order your food.

MWU's White Coat Ceremony is an event that happens once a year.

During the event, first year students receive their clinical white coats in an official ceremony. In addition, they also pledge their commitment as future healthcare professionals.

Friends and family of MWU students are welcome to attend the White Coat Ceremony.
