  2. Teaching faculty are committed to training and supervising each resident trainee in the field of Internal Medicine.
  3. Ensure that trainees receive comprehensive cognitive and procedural clinical education in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  4. Provide quality education to trainees that will enable them to become competent physicians who will serve their community with the best patient care and academicians, educators, and researchers.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion for the Mountain Vista Medical Center, Internal Medicine Residency Program.

The Midwestern University GME Consortium / Mountain Vista Internal Medicine Program prioritizes recruiting individuals for the program who will be mentored to effectively address the needs of the society and community being served. An inclusive residency team has directly resulted in diverse faculty and administrative personnel, creating an environment of teamwork, collaboration, and inclusion. Our training environment is supportive of ethnic minorities, women, and underrepresented groups in medicine, as we have an appreciation for the uniqueness that each person brings to the workplace. We aim to align our recruitment and diversity goals to enhance the needs of the community we serve. Our Sponsoring Institution (SI) serves as a pipeline for residents and future IM Residents.

The SI tracks ethnicity match statistics to increase the number of underrepresented minorities within our residency and faculty population. Residents have an opportunity to participate in DEI committees through the medical school focused on cultural awareness, belonging, and recruitment of underrepresented minority populations.

Four of our current faculty members, including the interim program director, were prior graduate residents from this program and the GME Consortium. The program continues to strive for this goal.

The Internal Medicine program participates in annual training to better understand unconscious bias and how to navigate beyond unconscious bias.

Our affiliated medical schools have extended several scholarship funding programs for healthcare students from underrepresented minority groups. These scholarships apply to minority groups as defined by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), including American Indian and Alaska Native communities, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders. They are committed to diversity and supportive of our program's recruiting efforts. The medical school also participates in numerous community outreach programs for high school students.

In addition, our Sponsoring Institution’s library has published an updated listing of resources to include live webinars that provide many new diversity, equity, and inclusivity educational materials for our residents, faculty, and administrative staff to broaden their knowledge and scope of understanding of diversity as healthcare professionals. In addition to supporting the diversity of our residents, faculty, and administrative staff, our clinical practice opportunities and clinics are also comprised of patients from diverse backgrounds. This allows our residents to look at cultural sensitivity across the overall spectrum of the residency program.

Our program serves a diverse population in a diverse economic area.
