Course Description:

What questions should I be asking my patients to avoid drug interactions with street drugs? What is the impact on my practice of the recent resolutions, approved by the American Dental Association, for providing dental care for patients who are and/or have been chemically dependent?  What are some of the oral manifestations of street drug abuse? How will I know if a person is under the influence of street drugs? What are the characteristics of and how do I manage the "doctor shopper"?  Do I have to take any precautions with the dental patient who is under the influence?  Why is it so important that the dental staff be knowledgeable about street drugs? Why am I at risk? What are some characteristics of adolescent substance abuse and what do I do about it? 

The dental team is in a unique position providing dental care to a patient population that may be regular users or experimenting with mood altering drugs. This dynamic, brutally honest, and graphic presentation will take you from the streets and into the office to help you identify and manage the substance abusing patient.  Discussion includes the origins, types, mechanisms of action, and signs and symptoms of commonly abused prescription and illicit drugs.   This course will satisfy Arizona's Board of Dental Examiners Chemical Dependency licensure requirement.  Out of state dentists should check with their dental board's Chemical Dependency requirements.

Learning Objectives:

After completion of this course the participant will be better able to:

1. Describe the signs and symptoms of commonly abused prescription and illicit drugs in patients and adolescents,
2. List what medications to avoid with the suspected drug abusing patient,
3. Recognize and manage the doctor shopper,
4. Evaluate and manage the chemically-dependent patient,
5. Descirbe and recognize "meth mouth", "lean", "whippets", "parachuting", "bath salts", "Spice Diamond", "Spice Gold", and more,
6. Explain "how a kid can get intoxicated on hand sanitizer?"
7. Discuss if marijuana is addicting? and
8. List the medical properties of marijuana.

Speaker Biography:

Harold L. Crossley, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland Dental School.  A native of Rhode Island, Dr. Crossley received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island in 1964.  He later was awarded the Master of Science (1970) and Doctorate degrees (1972) in Pharmacology. The University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore awarded Dr. Crossley the D.D.S. degree in 1980.  The liaison between the classroom and his part-time dental practice produced a practical approach to understanding the pharmacology of drugs used in the dental office.

Dr. Crossley has co-authored a number of articles and four books dealing with a variety of topics within the field of pharmacology.  Other areas of expertise include the pharmacology of street drugs and chemical dependency.  He serves on the Maryland State Dental Association's Well-Being Committee, is an active member of Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and an honorary member of the Thomas B. Hinman Dental Society. . He was the recipient of the 2008 Gordon Christensen Lecturer Recognition award presented by the Chicago Dental Society and the recipient of the 2012 Award of Distinction presented by the Academy of Dentistry International for his efforts in Continuing Dental Education. He has been a consultant for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and other law enforcement agencies since 1974.  Drawing on this unique background, Dr. Crossley has become nationally and internationally recognized as an expert on street drugs and chemical dependency as well as the clinical pharmacology of dental drugs.

Cancellations and Refunds: The Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Arizona Continuing Dental Education (MWUCDM-AZ CDE) office reserves the right to end registration when the enrollment limit is reached and to cancel, modify or alter content, faculty or location for any course if circumstances indicate such a change is advisable. If the MWUCDM-AZ CDE finds it necessary to cancel a course, a full refund will be issued. No travel expenses will be refunded to the registrant in the event of course cancellation or cancellation of any registration. Full tuition refunds are issued if the participant cancels in writing two weeks prior to a course. Cancellations processed during the two weeks prior to course date will be refunded tuition minus a late cancellation fee of $75. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received three days prior to the day of the course or in the event of a no-show. Select courses may have individually specific cancellation fees and polices. A $50 fee will be assessed for all returned payments. Returned payments include returned checks and dishonored credit or debit card payments.
