The Midwestern University chapter of the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) set out to make Mother’s Day special for women living in Mesa-based shelter, A New Leaf Faith House.

On May 8th, AAWD co-community service chairs Julie Ho, AZ Dental ‘24, Helen Tai, AZ Dental ‘24, and Jessica Cruz, AZ Dental ’24 partnered with Susan Loper, A New Leaf’s volunteer coordinator, to host a homemade pancake brunch and cater to the mothers and their children. In addition to cooking the food, the students served and waited on the attending mothers, allowing them to sit back, relax, and enjoy their special day. After brunch Ms. Tai led an origami session with the children and taught them how to create flowers out of tissue paper. Each child then gifted the flower to their mother.

Community service has always been an important pillar in the AAWD. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic limiting opportunities to serve, MWU’s chapter of the AAWD continued to search for ways they could help. When they found A New Leaf, providing services for the women and children living there became their passion project. They are extremely excited to continue hosting events to uplift and celebrate these residents.
