INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEE (IACUC)
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for overseeing all research conducted under the auspices of the University involving the use of animals. The committee assists the university in establishing and implementing policies to meet federal standards for human care and use of animals in research. The committee reviews, approves, or requires modifications in proposed animal research studies to assure that pain or discomfort are minimized. The committee also assures that the University maintains a program of humane animal care, and that all faculty, students and members of the technical staff are trained in the appropriate methods of handling research animals. The Committee is composed of at least 7 members, and includes at least one non-scientist and one member who is not affiliated with the University.
Procedures for submission
To ensure that investigator's submission for their research protocols has sufficient information about the research protocol for the IACUC to conduct a thorough review and that the submission is handled efficiently by the ORSP, investigators should:
*Downers Grove Campus:
Prior to submitting an animal use application please review the IACUC Standard Operating Procedures and What Investigators Need to Know About the Use of Animals. Submit all Animal Use Protocols (AUP) to the IACUC and other items requiring review by the IACUC (i.e., Annual Reports, Amendments to previously approved applications, and Triennial Protocols), on the appropriate forms located on the ORSP Website. Submissions with incomplete forms will be returned to investigators without review. Submissions that require review by the convened IACUC will be placed on the agenda for the IACUC meeting based on the submission date. Submission of amendements to previously approved research that are minor in nature may be submitted at any time (IACUC Minor Amendment Form). Minor changes are limited to: changes in protocol title or funding source, animal genetic background or strain or gender (where change does not impact animal care), number of animals (additions are limited to 10% of number originally approved), and personnel other than the PI. Major Amendments are changes to the protocol outside of the above listed Minor Amendments. Major Amendments require a revised AUP with all changes underlined and a cover letter to the IACUC explaining the changes and rationale behind them. For Tiennial Protocols, please allow sufficient time prior to the application's expiratin date (4-6 weeks is recommended) for the IACUC to conduct the continuing review and for you to respond to any questions or concerns the IACUC may have.
Downers Grove Submission Dates and IACUC Meeting Dates
Animal Use Protocols and other items requiring review by the Convened IACUC must be submitted by the first of the month. Please contact the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for Committee meeting schedule, ext. 6395.

Submit all Animal Use Applications (Form B) to the IACUC and other items requiring review by the IACUC (i.e., annual review, amendments to previously approved applications, breeding colony applications, etc.) on the appropriate forms located on the ORSP Website. Be sure to download the AZ version of the forms. All submissions should be sent electronically to AZORSP@midwestern.edu. Submissions with incorrect or incomplete forms will be returned to investigators without review. Submissions that require review by the convened IACUC will be placed on the agenda for the IACUC meeting based on the submission date. All personnel on a protocol should have appropriate training as documented by the submission of Form B5. See Guidelines for IACUC Protocol Review for more details on submitting applications and amendments, the process the Glendale IACUC goes through for protocol review, and for other questions you might have.
Glendale Submission Dates and IACUC Meeting Dates
Animal Use Applications and other items requiring review by the Convened IACUC must be received no later than the 15th day of the month prior to the month in which the application will be reviewed (e.g., an application is due on August 15th in order to be reviewed at the September meeting). Please contact the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for Committee meeting schedule, ext. 3728.
The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) has created a brochure intended to communicate to investigators their responsibilities under PHS Grants Policy and PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. "What Investigators need to know about the Use of Animals" provides a succinct resource for investigators to quickly grasp the main expectations and requirements when using animals in research supported by the PHS.
