The marine pharmaceuticals website has been prepared with the generous help of several researchers from academia, industry, and government who are currently involved in the global marine pharmaceuticals pipeline, which involves both preclinical and clinical research on the pharmacology of marine-derived chemicals.
The content of the website is aimed at researchers in academia, industry, and government with an interest in the preclinical and clinical pharmacology of marine compounds, as well as those individuals among the general public who have an interest in the pharmaceutical potential of the enormous biodiversity of organisms present in the world's oceans. The global marine pharmaceuticals pipeline website will also hopefully contribute to inspire and attract a new generation of students interested in pursuing studies in the clinical and preclinical pharmacology of marine natural products.
The website is divided into several pages: The General Public page, provides a number of articles which describe the pharmaceutical potential of marine organisms as a source of novel chemicals for the development of novel therapeutic agents; the Preclinical Pipeline page, lists 15 peer-reviewed published articles that have systematically reviewed the global preclinical marine pharmaceutical pipeline from 1998-2011, these reviews thus include a large number of marine compounds that have demonstrated antitumor activity as well as a variety of additional pharmacological activities; the Clinical Pipeline page, presents the current status of 11 marine-derived compounds which are either in Phase III, II or I of drug development, and are part of the global marine pharmaceutical clinical pipeline (See A.M.S. Mayer et al. Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, 31:255-265, 2010);the Seminars page, list recent seminars on the global marine pharmaceutical pipeline prepared and presented by Dr. A.M.S.Mayer with the specific purpose of disseminating information on FDA-approved marine drugs, as well as those currently part of both the preclinical and clinical pipeline of marine drug development; the Meetings/Courses page, informs about scientific meetings where the latest findings on preclinical and clinical marine pharmacology are discussed; and finally, the Links page, compiles a number of institutions, companies and a specialized journal that have contributed, and continue to contribute to both preclinical and clinical marine drug discovery and development.
We welcome comments and suggestions from all those interested in improving the current marine pharmaceuticals website with the purpose of providing the most current information on the preclinical and clinical pharmacology of marine compounds.
