What inspired you to pursue a healthcare career?

My interest in medicine started when I was a patient in a pediatric hospital with pneumonia. My symptoms were gone as quickly as they came, but my interest in medicine continued to grow.  I was fortunate to have a pediatrician that took advantage of my curiosity and used every opportunity to allow my interest to continue to flourish.  She would allow me to use her stethoscope to listen to my heart and stomach. She would educate me on the location and function of various organs, and she would be sure to quiz me during my following appointments.

However, my interest turned into passion once I realized the importance of having physicians that look like me and the need to rectify the disparities that exist in minority and underserved communities.  My desire to be an advocate for my patients is what keeps me inspired and motivated.

How did your background and history factor into your career choice?

I am the first in my family to obtain a college degree. The realm of postgraduate education and medicine was not only a new experience for me, but for my family as well.  I am grateful to have such a close-knit family that has supported me throughout all my endeavors. Everything I do, I do to not only honor myself but to honor my family.

Why did you decide to attend Midwestern University?

I decided to attend Midwestern University because of their renowned status in osteopathic medicine and reputation for producing great physicians. 

What about a Midwestern University education do you want to carry forward in your career?

Midwestern has an open-door policy which allows students ability to talk to professors when possible. This allows students to feel supported by their faculty and educators.  This level of support is what I desire my future patients to experience.
