The Department of Integrated Medicine is responsible for required core clinical rotations in Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine, and an elective rotation in Radiology. It facilitates specialty-specific didactic lectures during the second, third, and fourth years.

Introduction

The Department of Integrated Medicine consists of three disciplines: Emergency Medicine, Human Behavior/Psychiatry, and Radiology. Human Behavior and treatment of psychiatric disorders courses are offered in the first two years, as well as an introduction to Radiology. Integration of osteopathic principles occurs in each of the courses offered during the four-year curriculum. Faculty regularly observe, debrief, and grade OSCE experiences throughout the four year curriculum. During third year clinical rotations, the department manages the core clinical clerkship in Psychiatry, and faculty provide small group lectures. Students are also provided an opportunity to experience Emergency Medicine as an elective in third-year and as a core rotation in fourth year. A Radiology elective is offered during third and fourth years. Third year rotations consist of office-based, hospitalist-based, and residency-based rotation opportunities.

Emergency Medicine Clinical Rotation

Emergency Medicine has enjoyed increasing popularity and stature in osteopathic medical schools throughout the United States. It occupies a unique niche in medical education in that it provides students with the opportunity to see an undifferentiated patient population with varying modes of presentation. This experience will stress diagnostic skills, ability to prioritize patient care and developing appropriate management strategies.

The rotation consists of four weeks of emergency department experiences. This service should expose the student to various aspects of the management of patients in an emergency department. These experiences should include reading, lectures, seminars, and patient care management.

Psychiatry Clinical Rotation

The rotation consists of four weeks of psychiatric experience in ambulatory and/or inpatient settings which should expose the student to various aspects of the management of patients in a psychiatry practice. This experience should include reading, instruction, and patient care management.
