Two Students Awarded Prestigious Schweitzer Fellowship

Two Midwestern University students have been selected for the nationally-recognized Schweitzer Fellowship, a program for graduate students who aspire to become lifelong leaders in community service. Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine student Amean Amra and Chicago College of Pharmacy student Divya Khandekar will participate in the year-long service learning program.

Midwestern Researcher: Bacteria in the Small Intestine Indispensable for Fat Absorption
April 26, 2018
Researcher at Midwestern University led a new study showing that Western diets, high in fat and simple sugar, promote the growth of bacteria in the small intestine that increase fat digestion and absorption. The goals of the study, published in the journal Cell Host and Microbe on April 11, 2018, were to determine if microbes were required for digestion and absorption of fats, to begin to learn which microbes were involved, and to assess the role of diet-induced microbes on the digestion and uptake of fats.

Three faculty members from Midwestern University in Glendale participated in a free public forum about the ongoing opioid crisis in America and non-opioid alternatives for pain management. The presentation took place at the Glendale Foothills Library on April 3rd as part of the University’s free monthly Community Health Lecture Series.
