Franciscan St. James Health has evolved from a 50-bed acute care hospital that opened its doors in 1911 to a two-campus health care delivery system that today reaches more than 55,000 in the far south suburbs of Chicago, IL. With campuses in Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields, Franciscan St. James Health offers a wide range of services and a unique blend of both allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (D.O.) philosophies of medicine. Through the ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration, Franciscan St. James Health has dedicated itself to caring for the sick, fostering health, and providing compassionate, high quality health care for 90 years.

More than 700 physicians serve on the Franciscan St. James Health medical staff, offering patients a unique blend of osteopathic (D.O.) and allopathic (MD) medicine.

Highlights:

• First hospital in Chicagoland to offer advanced nuclear medicine camera, the E.CAM duet, capable of specific imaging called positron emission tomography (PET)
• Opened St. James Center for Psychological Wellness to provide an outpatient setting to help individuals who are experiencing or recovering from a mental disorder, or who are interested in maintaining a high level of mental wellness
• Welcomed a 19-member cardiovascular and thoracic surgery practice with extensive experience in heart and lung transplantation, minimally invasive surgery, and valve surgery. This new group positions St. James in the company of the premier cardiac surgery programs in the Chicagoland area.
• Partnered with Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center to complete phase II of the Women Take Heart study
• Specialized Wound Care Center utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to monitor patient treatment across the continuum of care to prevent hospitalization due to wound infection

Charity care and social accountability initiatives:

• Participants in local coalitions address diversity, violence, African-American, and Hispanic women's health issues
• Active in Crossroads Maternal Child and Family Coalition
• Founded and supports the Family Health Society, a clinic for the uninsured and underserved
• Offers free courtesy van transportation to patients

Unique partnerships:

• St. James Hospital and Health Centers partnered with Prairie State College and the Chicago Heights Park District to construct a 64,000-square-foot, medically-based fitness complex on the campus of Prairie State College in Chicago Heights. The Fitness Complex, home of the St. James Health and Wellness Institute, opened its doors to the public in March 2001.
• St. James Hospital and Health Centers is partnering with Patrick Sweeney, M.D. and 44 other practicing physicians within its service areas to build the Southwest Ambulatory Surgery Center, LLC, a four-operating room forum, multispecialty ambulatory surgery center in Mokena.
• Franciscan St. James Health is committed to supporting the medical education programs of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and Midwestern University.
