Arizona Summer Medical Program Opportunities for High School Students

Program: Med-Start
Activities: Five week academic summer program for low income, minority and first generation college-bound students interested in health careers. Participants prepare for college through classes and explore career opportunities. Only 40-60 students accepted per year. Apply on-line.
Dates: June 3 - July 7, 2013
Application Deadline: February 1, 2013
Cost: $2,100 includes registration fees, meals, residence hall, books and supplies. Financial aid available.

Program: Summer Institute on Medical Ignorance (SIMI)
Activities and Needs: Seven week paid summer research program in which students work full-time in various medical laboratories and clinics at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, doing research on such subjects as cardiovascular disease, genetics, cancer, neuroscience and preventive medicine. Attendance at seminars is mandatory.

Organization: Maricopa Community Colleges
Program: The Hoop of Learning Medical Professions Internship Program
Activities: This Program is designed to build a high school to college bridge and foster educational resilience and career development among Native students. Hoop will recruit Native American high school junior and seniors. Students will take college credit health classes at a community college in the morning and participate in an internship at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center in the afternoon. Students will participate in a paid internship program at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Students will be involved in hospital activities and the actual care of patients in three areas: dental, surgery and mental health.

Program: Nurse Camp
Activities: Weeklong program that combines opportunities for students to observe nurses in action, participate in hands-on simulated skills labs, attend interactive lectures, and enjoy fun, games and adventure. Those selected to be participants will come away with a true understanding of what nursing is all about.

Activities and Needs: Assist individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease and to advance research leading to a world without Alzheimer's. Activities and Needs: March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against pre-maturity, birth defects and low birth weight.
