The Offices of Communications collaborate as a professional team with expertise in communications, graphic design, web development, printing and publications, and media relations. The four units in our department — Marketing, Publications, Media Relations, and Special Events — coupled with the unique expertise of our staff members, provides communication solutions that produce effective results for Midwestern University.
The Office of Communications also publishes the MWU Style Guide, which includes editorial and graphics standards for the University.

The Office of Development & Alumni Relations creates opportunities for students, alumni, faculty, and staff to connect or reconnect with Midwestern University through special events, programming, pledges, and gifts. In addition, we attract and develop philanthropic support to advance the mission and vision of the University.

Karen D. Johnson, Ph.D.
Vice President of University Relations
Since 1994, Karen Johnson has been directing the external relations efforts of Midwestern University at both its Downers Grove, IL, and Glendale, AZ, campuses. As Vice President of University Relations, she oversees the offices of admissions, development & alumni relations, and marketing & communications for the University’s graduate and professional programs in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine, optometry, veterinary medicine, and the health sciences. Dr. Johnson has overseen the initial creation and continued development of the university’s web site, which has won an Addy Award for Best of Category and a bronze medal from the Admissions Marketing Report. The University has also won multiple honors from the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Excellence in Communications Awards Program; two Aurora Awards; a MarCom Award; and The Communicator Crystal Award.
Dr. Johnson currently serves on the Board of Directors of UMOM New Day Centers in Phoenix, AZ; the Board of Directors of The Foundation for Public Education in Paradise Valley, AZ; and the Honorary Board of the YWCA Maricopa County. Previously, she has served as the President of the Board of Directors of the YWCA Maricopa County in Phoenix, AZ; the Chair of the Nominating Committee and Member of the College of Wooster Alumni Association Board in Wooster, OH; member of the Board of Directors of the Children’s Angel Foundation in Phoenix, AZ; Past Chair of the Marketing Advisory Council of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine in Bethesda, MD; and a member of the Board of Directors of the Downers Grove Chamber of Commerce in Downers Grove, IL. She has made several professional presentations on university marketing and interactive media issues for Stamats Communications and the American Marketing Association.
Dr. Johnson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the College of Wooster (1987), her Master of Arts degree in liberal studies from Northwestern University (1994), and her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Higher Education Administration from Loyola University Chicago (2008). Prior to working at Midwestern, Dr. Johnson served in editorial management positions at the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the American Journal of Ophthalmology. She also taught high school history and coached basketball and softball at a private high school in the Cleveland area.
